OCTOBER PARTY

October gave a party;

The leaves by hundreds came,

The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples and leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,

And everything was grand,

Miss Weather led the dancing,

Professor Wind the band.

October 2009

Autumn is my favorite season of all!

This season touches every sense.

Touch, smell, taste, sound and sight. Autumn truly is a mosaic of all the seasons!

Autumn is also my favorite season to paint, with its rich colors of orange, gold, yellow, red, copper and green.

When I begin to paint my calendar for the new year I always start with a Halloween picture. This month I’d like to share two of my favorite Autumn memory paintings with you.

“Trick or Treating” – a memory painting by Lucy Ogletree.

Trick or Treating

Special moments at Grandma’s House

“Trick or Treating At Grandma’s House” is a memory painting that I painted several years ago.

I remember painting this picture and being transported back to a very special moment in time making Halloween costumes with friends and visiting Grandma.

As I painted, I remembered the many wonderful memories of the costumes my sister and I created for Halloween. And it made me smile.

When we were little our Mom made our costumes but as we grew older we loved to create our own.

On Halloween, my sister and I, along with a little girlfriend who lived down the road from us, would meet at dusk. After what seemed like an hour of picture taking by my Mom, we would venture out into the night in hopes of filling our little plastic pumpkins with lots of candy.

Our first stop would always be Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

Grandma would pretend she did not know who we were. I am pretty sure she loved Halloween as much as we did.

Of all the homes we visited Grandma and Grandpa’s was by far our favorite.

Grandma had chocolate bars and she was not stingy with them.

After Grandma’s house we had several more stops about 10 in all. It doesn’t sound like a lot of places to visit by today’s standards but our little plastic pumpkins would be over flowing with sweet treats.

I think 50% of our candy haul came from Grandma. Those memories of making costumes with friends and visiting Grandma’s house always brings a smile to my face.

Canning Peaches

A little help from friends goes a long way

Another Autumn memory painting I created is called “Canning Peaches”.

My Grandma in her country kitchen canning peaches was the subject of this painting.

Every fall my Grandma would harvest all the produce she grew in her garden.

She then set about canning peaches, pears, apple sauce, tomatoes, plus she made all kinds of jam.

My house was no different. My Mom also canned fruits and vegetables too. My sister Marian and I always helped.

But canning was very time consuming and cut into our play time. So we developed a plan to speed things up. Invite the neighbor girls over to play but don’t mention that “we have to help Mom with the canning part first” before we can play.

The little neighbor girls would fall for that every time and it would make canning go much faster!

To this day I love the foods of fall and Thanksgiving.

I really enjoy decorating my house with colorful fall foliage and then serving my family a traditional Thanksgiving dinner complete with turkey and all the trimmings right down to the pumpkin pie.

Thanksgiving at Winter Wheat

Every year we are open Thanksgiving weekend at Winter Wheat.

This year the weekend was so beautiful that it brought out a record number of folks to our area.

The Fall colors seem brighter and more vibrant this year than in the past few years.

To add to our weekend, Celtic harpist Jennifer White and musicain Robert from London performed in the afternoons and we offered hot apple cider and lots of cookies, coffee and tea to everyone who visited.

The sight and sound of geese flying overhead, and the aroma of fresh fallen leaves and hot apple cider made for a perfect fall day and hopefully to all who visited Winter Wheat a memorable Thanksgiving to always remember.
