September 2009

Having goats as pets has been a very interesting experience for Mike and me.

Yoshi our little pigmy goat was the size of a small cat when we adopted him 17 ½ years ago.

Over those 17 odd years his curiosity and zest for life has left me with many memories that I will always hold dear to my heart.

Since Yoshi passed away on September 16th 2009 I thought it only fitting to dedicate this newsletter as a tribute to our little friend Yoshi who was a little bright spot.

I hope these stories bring a smile to your face.

Zoe and Yoshi –

Our two goats who passed away this summer and are dearly missed.

Our little curious friend

Making new friends, being curious and making us smile.

Having a goat as a pet was a new experience for Mike, his sons and I. He was so little and so cute!

Mike’s boys named him Yoshi after the little dragon character in Natendo.

Our hound dog Sunny was so excited to have a new playmate and was always trying to get Yoshi to play with her. Sunny had decided that Yoshi was going to be her friend no matter what.

This became clear when a few days after we brought Yoshi home he disappeared. Who knew goats could jump over a 6 foot wall.

Mike and I searched everywhere for him. Looking in all of our buildings, walking up and down the rows of fully grown tobacco plants that surrounded our property.

But we couldn’t find him.

It worried us because the sky was getting very dark as a thunderstorm approached.

Yoshi decided to venture out on his own as a thunderstorm approached.

Our only hope was that Yoshi would decide to go towards the lights on our barn or the neighbor’s barn.

Mike and I stood in our garage staring at the tobacco field hoping we would see him run for shelter when it started to rain.

What we didn’t realize is that Sunny was also worried. All of a sudden, our dog Sunny bolted through the pouring rain, across an open field and disappeared into the tobacco field.

This was surprising to us because Sunny was very frightened of thunderstorms and would never leave our side until the storm was over.

Mike and I are still amazed at what happened next! Yoshi reluctantly came out of the field with Sunny behind him. Sunny was gently pushing and nudging him along with her nose. It was incredible.

Sunny was our hero on that day.

Yoshi’s friend and hero – Sunny

Yoshi was a curious little goat which often got him into trouble.

One occasion that I remember was the day a customer came to pick up their order at our shop. They parked their car out front and came into the shop. I looked out the window and there was Yoshi standing on the hood of their car looking through the window at me.

Another time Yoshi climbed into the open door of a delivery van and was not discovered until the driver happened to look in his rear view mirror and saw Yoshi chewing on a cardboard box at the back of the van.

We never let Yoshi in our house but he would try to sneak in every chance he got. One December I was carrying groceries into the house and Yoshi pushed past me and ran right into our living room. He then proceeded to pull over our 6ft Christmas tree and started to eat it. What a mess, ornaments were everywhere.

When we moved to our new home at Winter Wheat Mike built Yoshi his own little cabin. The very first week, Yoshi got the gate open and went for a little adventure walking down our long driveway across the highway and into our neighbor’s garage.

We received a call from our new neighbor asking if we had a goat and if we did it was in his garage. Over I went to get him. Yoshi had dumped the garbage over and was eating tomatoes that he had found in the can. What a mess. I know our “new” neighbor was not impressed.

Yoshi was such a happy little guy, he had a special walk when he was happy and he would spring in the air and do a little wiggle then run like the wind.

These are the memories of Yoshi that I will always hold dear to my heart.

I know Yoshi loved all the attention he received here at Winter Wheat and I know lots of folks are going to miss him too.
